CHOOSING APPS FOR SMSEs

Small and Medium sector companies are usually family or partnership based enterprises. They have their own set of challenges and issues. And especially in India, they are resistant to change unless there is a generational change in the ownership. This same applies to onboarding technical and digital services to improve work processes and so on. With fierce competition, these companies need to stay lean & mean as well as agile.  This is where various apps come in and play the role of enablers. Let’s take a deeper look at apps.

How to find the right app? 

  1. Intensive soul searching and in house consultations. The company must decide which challenges & problems need to be overcome in the long run. It has to consider which processes will be affected and so on. The budget for investing in apps and other tech changes need to be carefully thought out, with a bit of leeway in case some apps cost a bit more than budgeted. 

  2. Search and evaluate the many apps in the market.  Use the internet to search for the right apps of which plenty are available. Read the reviews of various customers on the internet as well as get referrals from others in your business & professional circle. You may even Test drive an app or install it into a sandbox to get a feel of it. 

  3. Arrive at a decision. Consult with all stakeholders (management and teams) in the company. Shortlist apps and a vendor to help you with the process. Find out the cost, security, and compatibility with your CRM as well as currently being used apps. Deploy the app and customise it as per your needs. 

 Some of the problems solved by apps 

  1. Automation of manual processes. There are many mundane processes that need to be done daily and regularly.  These take up time. The same precious time which employees can spend doing other important tasks / chores if apps can take over these mundane tasks.  Processes such as invoicing, proposals, etc can be automated. Improve overall productivity while conserving time. 

  2. Data and decision making. Strategic planning and decision making are flawed if they are based on incomplete or dirty data. With CRMs and apps, data from many sources are consolidated for holistic views and decision making. Clean data is king and enables a company to march in the right direction. 

  3. Department teamwork. Most company owner / management find that their employees are not working in collaboration towards a greater and higher goals. They work in silos and often at cross purposes. This is a big problem and apps & tech tools can bridge these gaps. 

  4. Remote working option. Apps to enable team members to work from home / on the field or remote locations are required to make SMSEs agile and productive. With apps configured for all electronic devices, this is now a reality much to the relief of the company and its employee base. So, employees on leave or looking after sick relatives can work from home and be productive off-shore as well.
