Pleasing bosses annoying juniors

Analysis of one’s performance as a mid-level superior /manager should not be limited to annual reviews or SWOT analysis during the increment period. Are you the person who is always trying to please your supervisor / higher up at the same time running down or antagonizing your subordinates/ juniors at work with behavior and attitude. If this is you, then this article is a must-read for you. Or you could know someone like that or be on the road to becoming one such person.

As Peter Shilton quoted –“ As a goalkeeper, you need to be good at organizing the people in front of you and motivating them”. A mid-level manager is someone who is stuck between a rock and a hard place. You have to show results to your bosses at the same time keeping your reportees happy/motivated to show desired results.

However in the rat race and result oriented pressure, one forgets one is dealing with human beings with feelings and sensitivities, as well as issues of their own. In order to maximize your own results you could end up riding rough shoulder over an individual or a group, thus annoying your juniors in order to please your bosses.

Well if you are out, watch out, In many firms appraisals by your team members and colleagues count just as much as reviews by your seniors. So tread a fine line. Step back, take a deep breath, reevaluate your deadlines, etc, and be Happy. If you are happy, you spread cheer and emit good positive vibrations. Don't berate, humiliate or criticize a junior just to get results and become your boss’s favorite “to go man”. Remember your success is built on the success of your colleagues etc, if they are Happy and deliver, so will you and the Company will grow and you ride up on the corporate ladder.

Bridge the gap between being a boss and a junior by being a good manager and yes human being...
