Must-Have career and business skills in 2021

As we all hope for a quick end to 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic which has gripped most of the world, it is also time for reflection, family time, upgrading skills and preparing for the future. We are heading into unchartered territories and don’t know what the future has in store for all of us. Will work from home, social distancing be the norm? As anxieties grip us in mass psychosis, it is time that we also looked inwards, look on how to improve ourselves as people and as working members of society.

In this journey of introspection, let’s look at some must-have career and business skills in 2021 to help us all bloom in the ‘new world”:

Attract the attention of customers - Amidst the clutter and crowding of space with so many companies and rivals, we need to put out content which is different, eye catching, simple and gets the attention of the customers. Creating a personal connect by talking/displaying our knowledge, insights, and experience through social media such as blogs, videos is a skill for 2021. Put out content, become visible and engage the audience.

Focus – When we are doing any task at work or at home, we should focus. Give it our best and avoid distractions. No multi-tasking here. 4 hours of focussed work delivers better results than 8 hours of weaving through stuff. This increases productivity and reflects positively for all of us in our workspace.

Emotional Quotient – EQ as some of us know it is increasingly becoming much sought after in the business world. Emotional intelligence means we are able to control our emotions in a positive way. Some much-required assets at the workplace are humility, patience, and self-awareness.

Connect with people - here we are talking about making genuine and heartfelt connections with people we find interesting, not about networking as we know it. Meeting people, being sincere and displaying our knowledge will enable us to make worthwhile bonds and connects.  It could take the form of giving feedback on their work to others, sharing their work on social media, reviewing their products and so on.

Improve writing skills – We don’t all have to be writers and dole out scripts or books. Writing is a way of articulating thoughts, becoming a better decision-maker and improving communication skills. Start by blogging, writing a journal or an essay.  Every company and CEO should have a blog and contributions by employees must be encouraged.

Entrepreneurial Thinking - We all need to wear the entrepreneur’s hat. We need to think fast, come out with good ideas and solutions, sell our ideas.  Treat our lives and our works as a business.  Without the motivation and drive of a business person, we will find ourselves getting lost and even sidetracked in the fast-changing corporate world.

Be authentic - We are all unique human beings with varied traits and characteristics. Leverage them. Let us not copy or emulate others. Be ourselves and attract likeminded people. The same applies to networks, customers, fans, employers, etc.
